The Port of Rotterdam is one of the world's most important hubs when it comes to cargo traffic and the best starting-point for efficient intermodal transport. For most major container liner companies, Rotterdam is the first port of call in Europe. The network of the Port of Rotterdam includes a number of deep-sea cargo terminals, hundreds of logistic service providers and excellent hinterland connections. In addition, Rotterdam offers tailor-made solutions for all types of cargo and volumes.
Warehousing and distribution services for containerized cargo are offered in the three Distriparks. These logistic parks are situated at unique locations in the port, and are home to distribution centers of some of the major players in the logistics industry. An extensive range of services is offered in these logistic centers; from customs formalities to value added logistics.
Rotterdam market leader European container ports
Directly to the West of the current port and industrial area, a new top European location for port activities and industry is to be created in the North Sea. Maasvlakte 2 will shortly cover a net surface area of 1,000 hectares of industrial sites, located directly on deep water.
The land reclamation will measure around 2,000 hectares in total. Half of this will consist of infrastructure, such as sea defenses, fairways, railways, roads and port basins. The other 1,000 hectares will provide the space for industrial sites.

Container throughput, distribution and the chemical industry will be given plenty of room on Maasvlakte 2. Not only in terms of surface area, but also depth. Maasvlakte 2 will be accessible for the container ships of the future. With a depth of 20 meters, the port is accessible for container ships that are unable to berth in other European ports.
As well as the container sector, the Maasvlakte 2 offers space for the chemical industry and distribution. A first option for the release of a 30-hectares site has been awarded to Lyondell, a major player on the chemical market.
