Transportation infrastructure in the Netherlands: key facts

  • Roads: 135,470 km, of which 2,360 km highways. There are almost no toll roads, and the speed limit is 120 km/hour on the highways.
  • Railways: 2,809 km, of which more than two-thirds is electrified.
  • Waterways: 5,046 km, of which over 75% are canals. 6,215 km (navigable for ships of 50 tons) (2007)
  • Pipelines: about 18,000 km. gas 3,816 km; oil 365 km; refined products 716 km (2008)
  • Seaports: there are 15 seaports in the Netherlands with regular international connections. The most important are Rotterdam (387 million tons of transshipments), Amsterdam (87 million tons), Vlissingen/Terneuzen, Moerdijk, Delfzijl.
  • Airports: four international airports: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Rotterdam Airport, Eindhoven Airport, and Maastricht Aachen Airport, and a network of smaller private airports (about 20).
  • Airfreight: 70+ air freight companies serving Europe and the world.
  • Air carriers: 28+ majors include KLM, American, Continental, Delta.
  • Road hauliers: around 12,000, of which 500 provide logistics services.
